[Review] DLC - Kingdom Hearts III Re:Mind
I shelled out the money to get Re:Mind, like some kind of idiot! Here are my thoughts.
Kingdom Hearts III Re:Mind is equal parts game update and DLC, when you buy the DLC you don't get any downloads really, all it does it let you access it, the actual DLC is part of the 1.09 update, which includes graphics enhancements.
First off, I had an issue with this where I ended up needing to reset my licenses, which I only figured out to do from a reddit post from someone who had the same issue. It was marked as "purchased" and said it was installed, but there was no new addition to the main menu after installing the update. When I went to the add-ons section through the in-game PS store option, it just said "this content cannot be accessed at this time", or something like that, and I just couldn't do anything. This is bullshit and I don't know whose fault this is, but I almost wasted 30 dollars. Well, I mean I still kinda did but I'm getting ahead of myself.
Oh yeah, that's right, this DLC is 30 dollars. 40 if you want the version with the concert video!
So what even is this DLC? Why release DLC like a year later? Do Sora and Kairi ever bang? I'll answer all these questions!
First off, this DLC contains 3 "episodes". There's the titular Re:Mind episode, which is a bonus essentially "true ending" for the main game. It deals with a few convenient plot points, making some things that happen go from convenient to contrived(but hey this is Kingdom Hearts we're talking about), as well as is a direct follow-up to the ending of the game and more directly leads into the next games. The second episode is called the Limitcut Episode, which gives 13 bonus bosses. The third is the Secret Episode, with one bonus boss. I'll review these each and then give my final thoughts, at the end.
So first off we have the main part... it's uhhh, I mean it's really cool? Plot wise this is pretty much useless, all it does is take care of one issue at the end of III and create another one. We swap one character being missing and needing to be found for another. I won't say who, I would but making spoiler blocks on blogger is too much of a hassle. The big problem is that like 70% of it both content and plot wise is re-used from the ending parts of the main game. Like, it's super cool you get to play as different characters this time around, like being able to play as Riku during a boss Riku is a part of, being able to play as SPOILER CHARACTERS BUT HONESTLY YOU KNOW WHO THEY ARE as well, though sadly you don't get to play as Axel except in one short part. You mostly watch the same cutscenes with added little bits due to Sora having traveled back in time to do some things that'll make him able to save somebody. I was expecting this to continue on more after the end of the base game but it doesn't really, and most of what you do is re-fighting bosses but now as a different character which is cool. A lot of cool stuff happens, for sure, like a cool fight where every main character aside Sora fights some dudes while floating in the sky and a part where Sora RECONNECTS THE HEARTS WITH THE POWER OF LIGHT and like reflects light off a bunch of very Kingdom Hearts-y representations of peoples hearts. There's a part where god damn holy SHIT you get to play as Kairi, finally, after all these years, and there's a cool team up attack you can do I think it's even called Dearly Beloved and they grow angel wings and smash the fuck out of the boss and one of the feathers flies by and each time IT SHOWS A DIFFERENT MEMORY THAT SORA AND KAIRI SHARE OH MY GOD. The ending CG scene is a bit different now, with even more characters hanging out and getting to be friends and relax and not have to deal with this crazy bullshit anymore, it's pretty great. Like, I think this part is worth money, but 30 dollars? I mean, I beat it in about 5 hours, it's not even 10, but costs half as much as the full game! Well, maybe the other episodes make up for that?
Ha, no! Limitcut Episode is just a fucking boss rush, like I said. A megaman style boss rush, approach the door you want, get transported and fight a boss. And guess fucking what? 1. All these bosses are just bosses you fought in the main game and refought in Re:Mind, but worse 2. These bosses are super fucking hard. Like they're ridiculous. 3. There's fucking thirteen of them. Even better, this one article I saw even said you need to grind to level 99 to fight them. Like what? I played this game a year ago, I barely remember all the mechanics and how it works, you want me to fight these guys and go back to and play a game I already finished? I hate going back to games to play DLC months later as it is. Like I just don't care anymore, not until I want to play the whole game again if I even do want to do that. You can't grind from within the Limitcut Episode, you'd need to either go back to Re:Mind or back to the main game. Really, maybe you don't need to be that high of a level, but without it you're gonna have to be the kind of person who plays KH on the highest difficulty, and that just is not me. These parts were designed for someone who has been playing KH3 all this time, someone who not only usually grinds to 99 in JRPGs, but someone who has 100% KH3. This was not at all made for someone like me and I wish I realized it before I bought it. Story wise even when you beat all the bosses it doesn't have that much it seems. The story is mostly just hey everyone is looking for that person who's gone now, and then Cid recreated some data and it's these bosses. This is basically the Data Organization side quest from II Final Mix. They would be great for those insane challenge seekers(it is I, Autist, the Seeker of Challenge) but I ain't one, so this is useless to me and not great.
Suffice it to say, I didn't beat a single fucking one of these. They were too hard, I didn't unlock the next episode. What episode is that?:
The Secret Episode. What happens in this is that Sora fights "Yozora", a young man who looks suspiciously similar to Noctis Caelum from FF15(Yozora even means "Night Sky", like Noctis does), who Sora recognizes from a game Rex was playing in the Toy Story world. When the fight is done, a scene that mimics one of the trailers for Final Fantasy Versus XIII plays, and both Sora and Yozora say the classic line "I've been having these weird thoughts lately, like... is any of this for real, or not?" and then say "None of this makes sense to me". After you beat remind, you're also shown the Secret Movie from the main game, which Yozora is also in. It might not make sense to them, but it makes sense to me baby. Versus 13 lives on in Kingdom Hearts, the next game is gonna be set in a modern day city but with MAGIC AND SHIT, and better yet it's Shibuya so maybe it'll crossover with The World Ends With You some more!
I can't comment on the quality of the Secret Episode cuz I couldn't get to it, but the video I saw of someone who did showed me all I really need to know. He was level 99, had been playing for about 80 hours(I beat the main game + re:mind in a lil under 40), and had the best Keyblade in the game it seems. The boss seems pretty hard too, pretty damn cool so check out a video, but too fucking hard. The same guy made a no damage run version of the fight so that should tell you what kind of person these fights are for, once again. I gotta say it'd be a letdown if it wasn't for the crazy hinting at the next game stuff, since it's just one really hard ass boss.
So, what do I think of this DLC overall? It think it's bullshit. This shouldn't be 30 dollars, even if you do the bonus bosses that's less than 10 hours, not counting the dozens it'll take you to grind to a point you can win them. At least 3 hour experience walking simulators have the decency to be like 10 dollars or less. This should be maybe 15 dollars, but probably 10. This is maybe on the level of Capcom making you pay money for Part IV of Asura's Wrath, on the one hand that was the best part and gives you the true ending, so it's bullshit you have to pay for it.. On the other hand, that was 10 dollars or so and was worth it for both game and story. I mean here, story wise I coulda read a wiki page, and gameplay wise like I said it was worth money just not 30 bucks.
This DLC is basically the Final Mix version of past KH games but just DLC this time. Because of that I've heard the argument this price is fine because it used to be much worse, before you'd have to pay a full price again for the Final Mix versions, and usually you couldn't anyway because they were japan exclusive. And sure, it's nice that it's not this time, and this is a better price, but here's a couple things:
1. Before, a jap could buy Final Mix versions for the same price as the original version... but that came with both the base game and the added content. That content was free for them. Sure, if you wanted it and already bought the original game, you'd need to pay for it again to get the bonus stuff... but you could also wait. It was possible to not pay 60+60 for that stuff. Here? You have to pay the 60(or whatever sale/used price you got it for) and 30 for the DLC. You're paying potentially 90 dollars total, 110 if you're like me and got the Deluxe Edition like a moron, so you can get access to a 5 hour bonus campaign made up for mostly reused stuff, and 14 too fucking hard bonus bosses. That's bullshit, when before you could spend 60(well I dunno how much JP PS2 games went for) later on for the full version of the game. Yeah, both ways are still bullshit, but how else were they supposed to it before patches? It made some sense for them to charge full price since it's a full game back then, but here this shoulda been fucking free.
2. Even if it was worse back then it doesn't excuse how it is now. 30 bucks for this is too much. I've heard the same people that bitch about pay DLC, pay to win shit, and lootboxes even in Battlefront II where they pretty much immediately took the shit people were complaining about out and they still complained, say that this is totally acceptable. Well it's not. The base game is 30 hours, this DLC is half the price of the base game, it should have 15 hours of content or it's a ripoff. End of story, don't let companies get away with this... says the guy who bought it. Oops!
Anyway, god damn, I mean I don't totally regret my purchase but I overpayed for what I got for sure. I could bought like 3-4 trips to McDonald's for that. Do I recommend you pay this money for it? I dunno, I'm not in charge of you. I would say though, know what you're getting and know that the totally original content in included in the main DLC part at least is something I really am glad I got to play, I wouldn't wanna miss out on it. But... I might be willing to miss out on it to save 30 bucks. If you think you wanna pony up the cash for such little but sometimes pretty great content, just know you're gonna be watching cutscenes you've already seen, fight bosses you already fought, get only a tiny bit more story, and unlock super hard ass bosses you probably aren't gonna fight.
This does fix a few problems I had with the ending parts of the game, so that's cool. We never did find out what was in that fucking box Luxu is guarding though...
