[Analysis] Omori - The NPCs in Deeper Well

The NPCs of Deeper Well are basically perfectly executed. Much like Stranger, what they are and the context in which they give you their cryptic and philosophical dialogue, makes it incredibly palatable to anyone who would otherwise roll their eyes. Had any other characters tried to say these things, many players would probably deem this game pretentious. Due to their placement, surreal, atmospheric, and unsettling Deeper Well and Black Space, it's easier to accept the nature of their dialogue.  It fits, is basically what I'm saying.  But, what does it mean? While, by design, some might write off what they all say as nonsense. The Stranger in particular has a hostile and slightly antagonistic tone to what he says, easily allowing people to hand wave what he says.  But they do mean something, I hope with this post to make some sense of it. I want to note how much of these appear as if they cryptically refer to things specifically in the dream world, but I think they secret...

[Analysis] Omori - The Final Battle

BIG OLD MASSIVE SPOILERS, OBVIOUSLY DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED THE GAME The first of a series of analysisess? Analysees? Whatever! on the subject of the indie game Omori, by Omocat. I love this game, am obsessed with it at least for the time being, and I have a lot to say. Hopefully I'll actually make more of these but we'll see! Oh also, in addition to complete unmarked spoilers they also just assume you're familiar with what I'm talking about. I don't want to explain that shit. " He who has a 'why' to live, can bear almost any 'how'." - Friedrich Nietzsche  A young boy stands alone in a white void. Well, not alone. True, someone else is there. His shadow? Some alter ego? The real him? Who knows? But that's not why he's not truly alone. If this is part of himself, then he'd alone. All that's there would be him. But, alone is what he'd been for 4 years. In that same sense, he'd not been; This other him ...

[Awards] Game of the Year 2020

Image
So, I haven't felt like making a game of the year post until around now. I know it's literally over halfway through 2021, but A: No one reads this blog and 2: Better late than never, right? So saying, welcome to my Game of the Year 2020 edition post!  I played 11 games last year, 4 of them were remasters. It's like every year!  I'm bad at these intros, what do you want me to say? Here we go: Best Remaster: Bayonetta and Vanquish Anniversary Collection VS Megaman Zero & ZX Collection I played both of these collections of old games in 2020, but which one is better? Well, on the one hand, the Bayonetta one allows you to play Bayo on a Sony console without the performance being garbage. The PS3's is so bad that /v/ considers it unplayable. Now, I can deal with the PS3 version, but now I don't have to. Don't have to get a copy of Vanquish either! On the other hand, it's just two PS3 games that are like, already being remastered? The Megaman Zero and ZX Co...

Rest in Peace, Kentaro Miura.

I can't catch a break. So, Kentarou Miura died.  I won't pretend that I care more about him dying then his story not being finished, at least by him(it would not at all be the same by someone else, even if that happened). But I think I do feel more sad about it?  I think I mentioned that it was unlikely we'd see the ending in our lifetimes in my review, but if not: It was unlikely we'd have seen the ending in our lifetimes. He claims the story was like, what, 80% complete in terms of plot progression? But, Berserk is 90% things other than plot progression. A lot has happened, but that's just raw events: In terms of plot, it could have been done in 10 or 15 volumes, instead of 40 fuckin volumes, if it's concerns were not elsewhere. I would imagine we were not 5 or volumes from the end, but likely 20 or more, if it continued at it's pace of character, world, lore, and theme building. That's, if it delivered a fully satisfying  conclusion to all characters ...

[Awards] Old Games of the Year 2020

Welcome all, to the Old Games of the Year post! As usual, I played more old games than new ones this year, so let's go over some of them shall we? So, what did I play this year?  Stuff I've played before: I replayed several games this year because, you know I like doing that. I'm somewhere inbetween those nintendrones who haven't played their supposed favorites and proclaimed best game evers since they came out, and the people who play them bi-monthly.   Musashi: Samurai Legend( Musashiden 2) Samurai Legend is PS2 sequel to the PS1's Brave Fencer Musashi(Musashiden), and sadly unlike that game doesn't seem to be as fondly remembered by the niche crowd. At least, I see the first game brought up a lot more. This game was mostly written off as shovelware to hold people over until the next Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts title came out(it doesn't help that KH2 released later that year), it even has character designs by Tetsuya Nomura and boy are they Nomura-y. I...

[Review] Manga: Berserk

Image
EDIT: If you read this review and think "oh I wanna read it now", and you haven't heard that the author died, the author died. I really highly doubt the story is actually going to concluded.  EDIT 2: Nevermind, his best friend and fellow mangaka is now at the helm. New chapters are a lot shorter than before, and this is due to the fact he has stated he will only adapt what was expressly written down or told to him by Miura and he will not attempt to flesh anything out, even saying he won't do things he doesn't remember clear enough. This will likely lead to a somewhat dissatisfying conclusion as the detail and fleshing out of things is what makes it so good, but still. I would say yes, do read it, just keep in mind that near the end of the Fantasia arc, you'll need to temper your expectations and only read on if you want to see this finally conclude. Mr. Berserk and his good pals: Thief Boy, Witch Girl, Fish Girl, Snakey Guy, Serious Lady, The Fairly Oddparent...
