[Review] Doujin Game: To Aru Pantsu no Railgun

Image
To Aru Pantsu no Railgun, which I guess translates out to "A Certain Pants of Railgun"(?), is a fun little action game created by Werk. It's basically a megaman clone. You play as the heroine of A Certain Scientific Railgun, Misaka Mikoto, as she attempts to reclaim what has been taken from her. There are 4 levels, each consisting of a 2 stage boss fight, with 4 Railgun characters. You can jump and shoot, just like megaman, When you beat a level, a new skill is unlocked. After Level 1, you can do a Lv. 1 Charge Shot, and after Level 2 you can do a Lv. 2 Charge Shot and a Dash, etc. The only problem is, since it's all boss fights, once you get the full Railgun attack you only have one more level to use it on. It's really awesome, so it's a shame. Everything pauses for a second while Mikoto flicks a coin in the air and shoots her mutha-fuckin' Wave Motion Cannon at whatever is in it's path. All in all, the game is fun and worth playing. It's also p...

[Review] Doujin Game: Battle Moon Wars

Image
So, let's review BMW. I have never owned a BMW so I can't really comment on them. Review over. Okay, but seriously, Battle Moon Wars. BMW is a Super Robot Wars style game based in the Nasuverse(I.E. The works of TYPE-MOON author, Kinoko Nasu, who is one of my favourite authors).  Cutscenes are done in Visual Novel style format, with characters portraits next to dialogue boxes, and backgrounds for locations. After a scene is done, a battle will occur. In battle you have a bunch of enemies to fight and specific battle parameters, such as not letting a certain character die, otherwise Game Over. Sometimes you need to kill all enemies, or just one big tough one. Other times, the conditions might change mid battle, with a new enemy appearing. Most of the time, the main enemy is a villain from the previous stories, others a former ally. You move around the field on a grid each turn, and attack enemies. Each character has a few attacks they can do which have different ranges, and ...

[Review] OVA: Mirai Nikki Redial

Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Hhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh. What was this? Why does it exist? It serves no purpose, really. All it was, was how Yuno got to the universe Yukiteru was in. Wait, no, it doesn't actually explain that part, it just shows how she got to that point. And everything in between was meaningless filler. Some of it was kind of funny, but that clashed really badly against the serious bits. There's a good way to do mood whiplash, and there is a bad way. This was the bad way. Let me run this down for you. First we get almost the entire last scene of the TV series(so they could reuse animation), with an added bit where Evil Murmur eats some crystal made from Yuno's body and then Other Murmur(#2 I think), and then we proceed to the OP. Now, let me just say the OP is fucking epic as always, and is one of the few good things about thi...

[Review] Anime: So Ra No Wo To

Alright, it's now time for me to review K-on! Army Version. K-on! of Duty is a piece of crap that tried to be a War is Bad story, a slice of life comedy, and a moe anime but failed at all three and was totally mediocre. Er... wait what? Oh, I'm sorry, I was momentarily possessed by some jackoff who doesn't understand how two or more genres can come together and support a story's theme. Okay, well, maybe that is a little harsh, but I will get to that. Sora no Woto, or "The Sound of the Sky", is an episodic anime series about girls in the military in a world that seems to have early 20th century technology. I say seems to because there is more to the setting than that. The setting combines several different cultures, and it may seem silly that people with Japanese and German names are in a Spanish town full of French people who speak Japanese, but it'll make at least a little sense once you're done, I swear. The story follows Kanata Sorami(MEANIN...

[Review] Anime: Toaru Kagaku no Railgun

Image
Toaru Kagaku no Railgun, AKA A Certain Scientific Railgun, is one of my favourite sci-fi series ever. That being said, I'm going to try to not just gush all over the place. This is especially because I think the second season is better. Let's go! Story: The story is about a group a friends in the technological metropolis of Academy City who must solve the mysterious happenings in School District 7. They are espers, people who can use Psychic Powers. One has the ability to keep the temperature of anything she touches constant, one can teleport, one is an Electromaster, and the last has no powers(though she is revealed to have wind powers if she ever awakens to them). Their powers Rank Level 0, Level 1, Level 4, and Level 5. Odd considering that they are literally opposites in social standing, as your status raises with level. As the story begins, strange occurrences have been happening in which criminal espers are showing power higher than their levels should be capable of. T...

[Review] Manga: Toaru Kaguku no Railgun

I'm going to review the Railgun manga. Since I plan on reviewing the anime as well, I'll just focus on the art and such for this. Fuyukawa Motoi's artwork is great. It's got a wonderful style that seems to mix old and new styles of anime/manga together. Some of the drawings look like something from an early 2000s Gainax anime(like FLCL only less silly) and I wish that the anime could have been done by said studio, in a similar style to Gurren Lagann. Well, kinda. If they had it wouldn't have been directed by Tatsuyuki Nagai and a lot of the stuff I really liked that they added probably wouldn't have been added. Or maybe it would have, knowing Gainax... oh, wait, the guys who did TTGL are Trigger now, never mind. The revamped character designs are great as well. I definitely prefer Motoi's versions to J.C. Staff's and certainly to Kiyotaka Haimura's. The art not only improved over time(comparing one of the early action scenes to the Encounter with...

[Review] Movie: Sinister

So, I just got back from this movie. It was pretty good. Scariest horror movie I've seen in a while, but that's not saying much. It had a few too many jump scares especially(SPOILER) at the very end, right before the credits, where ol' Sinister himself's face pops up right into the frame. I guess it was trying to be all "OH SHIT, HE'S COMIN' FER YOU NEXT!", but I think it would have been a lot better and more subtle if the left that out. Without going into too much detail about what happened, the very end is showing an 8mm video like the others, only this one is new and it slowly pans back to see some stuff happen(to tell you what it is would REALLY spoil it), and it makes it seem as if was trying to say, because you watched the movie it affects you, like at the end of The Ring. You know, like "you gotta pass it on" sort of thing only you're fucked no matter what you do. If they had left it at that it would have felt like t...

[Review] Anime: Black Rock Shooter(TV)

Okay, this is gonna be short, as this is a short show(only 8 episodes, weird huh?).  Basically, it's a retelling of the story from the OVA. The same characters, and some new ones, go through troubles and somewhere in another world alternate versions of themselves do battle. But then there's a twist and, well, that'd be spoiling it. I have to say, there were some inconsistencies that really bothered me, mostly stemming from the explanation of the "other selves" this anime went with. I don't think it's bad, but it does create some problems as some things with them don't make sense when we consider them a "being who shoulders your grief". In the end I think they couldn't quite decide WHAT they wanted BRS to be. In the OVA it was implied to be something similar, but since they didn't outright state anything there weren't inconsistencies, because we weren't 100% on what it's supposed to be. Also, rather than making it in an...

[Review] Anime: Persona 4 Special

Uuuuuuughhhhh... Where do I start? This was a huge mess, and it's a big let down. Objectively it's not terrible, but it certainly isn't good. Subjectively, however, it's a horrible. Okay, so it starts off with one of those "in the middle of things" with Margaret attacking Yu. Good start, a nice narrative method and it looks like they'll fit Margaret's Battle in there. But wait, what does that have to do with Izanami? Doubts crept in. After the OP, Yu and friends are having a going away party for Yu. Yu get's some mail. They need to get some stuff from the store so Nanako and Yu go and get it while the rest finish preparing the party. Yu is then suddenly is back at the beginning. He decided to open the mail he got this time and it's from Adachi, just like in the game. While they think about who could be the really real culprit, Yu once again is at the beginning, and is frantic to learn who it could be, he goes and finds the gas station att...

[Review] Anime: Arcade Gamer Fubuki

This is a lesser known SHAFT anime, that was made in about 2002, and is a 4 episode OVA series, based on a manga by Mine Yoshizaki, author of the well loved Keroro Gunsou(Sgt. Frog), is a spin-off of "Game Center Arashi", and is produced by Enterbrain(the company that owns the largest japanese game magazine, Famitsu, and created the RPG Maker engine) It's so obscure, it doesn't even have a wikipedia entry. EDIT: It does now. Also, the first episode was apparently aired on TV. Arcade Gamer Fubuki is a comedy and possible parody about a girl named Fubuki Sakuragasaki(say that 10 times fast), who is given a pair of panties that give her the power to be really good at arcade games, by a mysterious man aptly named "Mr. Mystery". She enters a tournament to determine the best Arcade Gamer in the world. During which, she is assaulted by an evil group known as "The Gulastic Group", and must defeat them with the power of her "Passion Panties". No...
